March 1, 2010 - Global Mapper v11.02 Released

Global Mapper Software LLC is pleased to announce the availability of Global Mapper v11.02 at http://www.globalmapper.com/global_mapper_setup_v1102.exe . Just download that file and run it to install v11.02. It will install over any existing Global Mapper v11.xx version. If you need the 64-bit version you can download and install that from http://www.globalmapper.com/global_mapper_setup_v1102_64bit.exe .

Numerous significant enhancements and bug fixes have been made to Global Mapper for this release. The most significant changes are described below:

  • Added support to the Map Layout tool for automatically generating a map legend, either from the collection of loaded map features display styles or from a user-specified color palette.\n
  • Added 'Area Styles' tab to Options dialog for vector layers with area features allowing users to setup the styling of areas in a layer. Now users can use the default type-based styling, apply a single style to all area features in a layer, setup an attribute-based styling system that styles the areas based on the value of an attribute value or the display label, or randomly assign colors to the areas in a layer.\n
  • Added 'Line Styles' tab to Options dialog for vector layers with line features allowing users to setup the styling of lines in a layer. Now users can use the default type-based styling, apply a single style to all line features in a layer, setup an attribute-based styling system that styles the lines based on the value of an attribute value or the display label, or randomly assign colors to the lines in a layer.\n
  • Added support for resampling raster and elevation layers using bicubic interpolation or a box average of size 3x3, 4x4, or 5x5, in addition to the previously available options of nearest neighbor and bilinear interpolation. The "anti-alias" option on the Raster Options dialog has been replaced with one for selecting the sampling method to use.

November 5, 2009 - Global Mapper v11.01 Released

Global Mapper Software LLC is pleased to announce the availability of Global Mapper v11.01 at http://www.globalmapper.com/global_mapper_setup_v1101.exe . Just download that file and run it to install v11.01. It will install over any existing Global Mapper v11.xx version. Numerous significant enhancements and bug fixes have been made to Global Mapper for this release. The most significant changes are described below:

  • The 3D Viewer now supports displaying 3D vector features in space above or below the terrain surface. You can also extrude 3D area features to create building-like displays.
  • Added new GPS menu option to send any loaded data map directly to a compatible Garmin GPS device, such as a Colorado or Oregon handheld, for display as a raster map on the unit. This allows display of anything, including imagery, on compatible Garmin GPS devices!
  • Added support for creating buffer areas some fixed distance around selected area and line features. This option is available from the Advanced Feature Creation submenu of the right-click menu in the Digitizer Tool.
  • Updated map layout to support adding text anywhere on the map.
  • Allowing sorting search results by any attribute rather than just the name.
  • Added support for controlling at what zoom levels a map layer will appear, similar to the functionality available with a map catalog. You can configure this by right-clicking on a layer in the Control Center and selecting the new option to setup what zoom levels a map will display at.

Global Mapper Software LLC is excited to announce the availability of Global Mapper v11.00 at http://www.globalmapper.com/global_mapper_setup_v1100.exe . It will install alongside any existing Global Mapper version, so you don't have to worry about losing what you're currently working on to evaluate it.

  • Support for importing/exporting GeoPDF® files!

  • Added real-time display of current cursor information (location, distance, elevation) to 3D Path Profile dialog. In addition, you can now also click to define a sub-path on the 3D Path Profile dialog and get information about that sub-path displayed.
  • Added support for scaling point symbols, adding custom point symbols from PNG, GIF, JPG, and (new vector) .gmsym files, and easily creating symbols of custom sizes and colors for common shapes, like dots, squares, etc.
  • Added toolbar for Digitizer/Edit Tool to make it easier to perform many commonly used operations.
  • Added ability to create new line features by tracing them without clicking at each vertex with the Digitizer/Edit Tool.
  • Added ability to rotate and scale features using the Digitizer/Edit Tool.
  • Added support for numerous new formats, including MrSID MG4 LIDAR, Vertical Mapper (MapInfo) Grid/Clutter, QCT, QED, HTF, SPS, BAG, and many others.

  • Added ability to easily create strike-and-dip (geology) points by right-clicking in the Digitizer Tool. You can now place your strike-and-dip points and specify the dip value, azimuth angle, and symbol to use and get the appropriate symbology displayed on the map.
  • Added support for adding custom area fill styles from image files.
  • Added support for rotating point symbols by a user-specified angle.
  • Added option to the Digitizer Tool to calculate the minimum, maximum, and average elevation values within selected area features.

November 13, 2008 - Global Mapper v10.01 Released

Global Mapper Software LLC is pleased to announce the availability of Global Mapper v10.01 for download. Just download that file and run it to install v10.01.

Numerous significant enhancements and bug fixes have been made to Global Mapper since the v10.00 release. The most significant changes are described below:

  • Added support for loading JPG files with embedded EXIF GPS position data. These files will be loaded as point features with picture icons. When you select one of these with the Feature Info Tool, the JPG image will be displayed.
  • Added support for tracking and managing multiple GPS devices via an input GPS data stream including $PRAVE sentences. With a compatible receiver, you can now use Global Mapper for fleet management. There is a new Manage GPS Devices option under the GPS menu that provides extensive functionality for managing the collection of GPS devices being tracked.
  • Added new Color Grade tab to raster options dialog to allow complex manipulation of color channel values and saturation for loaded raster files. This allows 'grading' each color channel from a specified input range for a color channel to a specified output range.
  • Added support for exporting loaded data to NITF format files.
  • Added support for exporting an alpha channel to ECW and JPG2000 format files.

August 21, 2008 - Global Mapper v10.00 Released

Global Mapper Software LLC is pleased to announce the availability of Global Mapper v10.00 for download. Just download that file and run it to install v10.00.

Numerous significant enhancements and bug fixes have been made to Global Mapper since the v9.03 release. The most significant changes are described below:

  • Added support for importing ESRI personal geodatabase (MDB) files.
  • Added support for importing and exporting BigTIFF files.
  • Added more control over placement of labels for point features. Now when choosing the font to use for point features, you can also choose where to place the label for the point relative to the point location. An automatic setting will try different locations to try and make the label fit.
  • Added support for selecting/changing the layer that features are in when editing existing features and creating new ones with the Digitizer Tool.
  • Added KML/KMZ Super Overlay Support! This allows working with huge data sets in Google Earth. The option to automatically grid the data on the KML/KMZ export dialog enables this behavior.
  • Added support for creating new feature coordinates based on distance/bearing and/or COGO values from a start location using the Digitizer Tool.
  • Added option on the Gridding tab for exports to grid to the currently selected area features. This will create a separate export file for each selected area feature. Naming can be done using the display labels or an attribute of the selected area feature(s).
  • Added options when editing multiple features to rename attributes and also to copy the values of one attribute to a different attribute.
  • Added new Coordinate Convertor option under the Tools menu to allow easily converting a coordinate between any two supported projections/datums/units.
  • Added ability to Search Vector Data dialog to limit your search to the existing search results. This effectively allows you to query on multiple attributes/values.
  • Added a large collection of new available line styles to use when rendering line features or area feature borders.
  • Added option to crop a loaded raster layer to the currently selected area feature to the Cropping tab of the Raster Options dialog accessible from the Overlay Control Center.
  • Added support for exporting loaded vector data to the MapInfo TAB/MAP format.
  • Added support for exporting loaded 3D line and point data to the SEGP1 format.
  • Made automatic collar cropping work for BSB marine charts.

Global Mapper Software LLC is pleased to announce the availability of Global Mapper v8.03 for download. Numerous enhancements and bug fixes have been made to Global Mapper since the v8.02 release. You are highly recommended to upgrade to v8.03.

The most significant changes are described below:

  • Added support for loading GML format files.
  • Modified the Overlay Control Center to display a checkbox next to each layer for controlling the displayed state of the layer. This replace the previous text of (Displayed) and (Hidden) used for each layer and also provides an additional mechanism to turn the layer on and off.
  • Fixed slowdown in rendering/exporting TIFF files.
  • Fixed problems exporting attributes as tags to DGN format files.

March 11, 2007 - Global Mapper v8.02 Released

Global Mapper Software LLC is pleased to announce the availability of Global Mapper v8.02 for download. Over 100 enhancements and bug fixes have been made to Global Mapper since the v8.01 release, making v8.02 the biggest point release in our history!

The most significant changes are described below:

  • Added the ability to load layers (like graphic images) to be displayed at a fixed location on the screen rather than tied to earth coordinates. This allows you to add things like headers and watermarks very easily. There is a new File menu command called "Open Data File at Fixed Screen Location" that allows this.
  • Added ability to export any loaded data to tiled images for use in NASA's World Wind application. The new World Wind export option under the File->Export Raster and Elevation Data menu will correctly break your data up into tiles at various zoom levels and also create the necessary XML file to view your data in World Wind.
  • Added the ability to copy features selected with the Digitizer Tool to the clipboard and then paste that copied data into any running instance of Global Mapper by using the new Edit menu options.
  • Added ability for users to add support for additional raster and elevation export formats through a DLL-plugin architecture (see the Developers for details).

November 6, 2006 - Global Mapper v8.01 Released

Global Mapper Software LLC is pleased to announce the availability of Global Mapper v8.01 for download. Nearly 100 enhancements and bug fixes have been made to Global Mapper since the v8.00 release, the most significant of which are described below:

  • Added support for loading DWG, WAsP .map, NTF-format contour files, and KINGDOM planimetric polygon files.
  • Added new Band Setup tab to the Options dialog for most multi-spectral raster files to allow controlling which bands are used for the red, green, and blue color channels during display.
  • Added option to associate a list of default attribute/value pairs with each area, line, and point classification on the * Styles tabs of the Configuration dialog. If a default attribute list is provided for a type any new features created with that type using the Digitizer Tool will automatically add those default attribute/value pairs.
  • Added support for feather blending raster data to a polygonal boundary rather than just along selected edges. This makes it much easier to feather blend the border of a large collection of adjacent files.

August 30, 2006 - Global Mapper v8.00 Released

Global Mapper Software LLC is extremely excited to announce the availability Global Mapper v8.00 for download. Just download that file and run it to install v8.00. It will install alongside any existing Global Mapper version, so you don't have to worry about losing what you're currently working on while you try out v8.00 and decide whether or not to purchase a license.

Among the numerous changes in v8.00 are the following:

  • Added support for loading data from OpenGC WMS servers. This is done through the new File->Download Online Imagery/Topo Maps menu command (formerly the Download TerraServer menu command). Several sources are built-in, providing easy access to gridded elevation data for the US (NED) and the world (SRTM) as well as color imagery for the entire world. Users can easily add their own WMS data sources as well.
  • Greatly improved the raster layer options by adding support for color balancing (individual red, green, and blue adjustment), linear min/max contrast stretch, setting transparency for multiple layers at a time, feather blending (see below) and cropping to native bounds or by a given number of pixels.
  • Added feather blending support for raster layers to the Options available from the Overlay Control Center. This is an extremely powerful feature that allows smoothly blending raster layers with underlying layers. For example, you might have high resolution imagery on top of lower resolution imagery. With feather blending, you can smooth the sharp edge and make the transition at the border seamless.
  • Added support for exporting loaded vector data to the Polish MP format for use the with the cGPSMapper application (www.cgpsmapper.com) which allows the creation of new maps for Garmin GPS units.
  • Added support for loading KML/KMZ, Polish MP, NITF (National Imagery Transmission Format), Geodas Grid (GRD98), CDF, and Intergraph COT format files.
  • Added support for checking clearances with respect to the first Fresnel zone when calculating view sheds and performing line of sight analysis. This allows for a more accurate visibility calculation depending on the wavelength being transmitted.
  • Added support for having labels be displayed at a fixed height in meters rather than at the same size at each zoom level. This option is on the bottom of the font selection dialog when either selecting a font for a classification on one of the * Styles tabs on the Configuration dialog or when selecting a font for a feature when editing it.
  • Made PRJ files be saved if possible in the newer PRJ well-known-text (WKT) format rather than the older ESRI-originated format that is no longer supported by ESRI products. There is an option to use the older PRJ format if desired on the General tab of the Configuration dialog.

Software aids in area emergencies

Local law enforcement agencies, first responders and Neighborhood Watch groups are now able to work together using commercial grade software that allows them to view aerial photography of Phelps County to assist in emergencies.

The software was made available in March at the request of the Phelps County Disaster Committee (PCDC) from the Global Mapper company. Global Mapper donated a copy of the software to the Rolla Police Department (RPD) and the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department (PCSD). PCDC has been using the software to create Neighborhood Watch databases for several months and now law enforcement agents will be able to use the program in conjunction with Neighborhood Watch groups and in law enforcement activities.

  • Added NTv2 grid shifts for the AGD66, AGD84, NAD27 (Canada), and NZGD49 datums.
  • Significantly improved the display of raster and gridded elevation data at intermediate zoom levels by always anti-aliasing the display when not zoomed into the pixel level of the data and not zoomed out so far that it doesn't matter much. There will be a slight performance hit for this, but the improvement in display quality seems worth it.

August 4, 2005 - Global Mapper v7.00 Released

Global Mapper Software LLC is pleased to announce the release of Global Mapper v7.00 for download. Just download that file and run it to install v7.00. It will install alongside any existing Global Mapper version, so you don't have to worry about losing what you're currently working on.

Among the numerous changes in v7.00 are the following:

  • Support for grouping collections of map files together into a "map catalog". Map catalogs allow you to easily load, view, and manage large collections of data without using too much system memory. Use the "File->Create New Map Catalog" menu command to create a map catalog. It can later be edited from the Overlay Control Center.
  • Support for searching and editing loaded vector data based name, attribute, and description/type values. This searching allows both textual and numeric comparisons. Features can be edited and deleted directly from the search results.
  • Support for gridding (aka tiling) data on export to break up files into a regularly spaced grid of smaller files. There is a Gridding panel on most exports to allow this.
  • Added support for tracking real-time GPS locations from Garmin USB GPS devices.
  • Added support for calculating "cut-and-fill" volumes within area measurements and along linear measurements using the Measure Tool (right click to see the Calculate Volumes option) and also the Path Profile Tool.
  • Added ability to easily create rectangular, square, arc, circular, and elliptical area and line feature using the Digitizer Tool. There are additional items on the right click popup menu for drawing these shapes.
  • Added option to create concentric range rings (i.e. circles of a given radius) on the right-click menu in the Digitizer Tool.
  • Made workspace files support relative filenames, allowing data referenced by workspace files to be moved so long as the workspace file is moved as well.

July 21, 2005 - Global Mapper helps solve 3,000 year old mystery of ancient Ithaca, the island of Homer's Odysseus

The location of Greek hero Odysseus' homeland - the island of Ithaca described in the poet Homer's Odyssey - is a mystery that has baffled scholars for nearly 3,000 years. Now this ancient enigma has been solved with the help of Global Mapper's innovative techniques for visualising satellite imagery and digital elevation models.

The site of Homer's Ithaca has been identified by Robert Bittlestone, Chairman of the UK management consultancy Metapraxis, whose quest was motivated by combining his company's experience in the visualisation of complex data with a lifelong interest in Greece and the classics. He has solved the problem with the help of James Diggle, Professor of Greek and Latin at Cambridge University, and John Underhill, Professor of Geology at Edinburgh University.

Many people have thought that Homer's island of Ithaca was fictitious, but that was also believed about Homer's city of Troy until Schliemann found its real location in the 1870s after reading the Iliad and interpreting the clues that the poet provides. This radical solution to the mystery of ancient Ithaca's location was discovered by sifting through the Odyssey and following a similar detective trail of literary, scientific and archaeological clues. The remarkable conclusion is that researchers over the centuries have been looking for ancient Ithaca in the wrong place.

Robert Bittlestone comments "Global Mapper provided the project team in Greece with two crucial capabilities. Its powerful satellite image visualisation and printing tools allowed us to conduct field-work equipped with detailed maps of the areas under study, while its support for custom shading of altitude ranges via Digital Elevation Models enabled us to answer an age-old clue in the Odyssey about low-lying vs. mountainous terrain. These insights would have been difficult or impossible to obtain via conventional cartographic techniques and they also help to explain the discovery for the readers of the book."

June 8, 2005 - Global Mapper v6.09 Released - Add New 3D Viewer/PNG Export

Global Mapper Software LLC is pleased to announce the availability of Global Mapper v6.09 download. Over 70 (yes 70!) enhancements and bug fixes have been made to Global Mapper since the last version, the most significant of which are described below:

  • Replaced the old 3D viewer with a brand new one written from scratch. The new viewer should work on any system without requiring hardware acceleration to be disabled, displays higher resolution terrains, has several usability improvements, and can export to PNG, JPG, TIFF, and BMP files.
  • Added support for exporting loaded data to PNG format files.
  • Added import/export support for the Global Mapper Grid format, a brand new highly compressed format for storing gridded elevation data like DEMs. This format is not only very small, but it draws and loads very quickly and requires very little memory.

April 18, 2005 - Global Mapper v6.08 Released - Fixes TerraServer Access

Global Mapper v6.08 is now available for download. Over 30 enhancements and bug fixes have been made to Global Mapper since the last version, the most significant of which are described below:

  • Updated to work with the latest TerraServer changes. TerraServer access was broken in all previous v6.xx releases on about April 16th, 2005 when a minor change was made by the TerraServer team.
  • Renamed the "Pick Tool" the "Feature Info Tool" and made numerous enhancements to the display of feature information on the Feature Info dialog. You can now copy attributes and values to the clipboard, right click on an attribute and visit the URL referenced by the value, or right click on an attribute and open the filename in the value either into Global Mapper or using the Windows associated program for the file extension.
  • Added support for loading MODIS imagery in HDF format, Swiss elevation grid data in DHM format, and (Geo)TIFF files compressed using the ZIP(Deflate) method.

  • Replaced the help bitmap and "Click Here to Download Data" button when nothing is loaded with a set of large "Quick Start" buttons to provide easy and obvious access to some of the primary features of Global Mapper.
  • Added support for adding your own custom datums. Just press the "Add Datum" button on the Projection tab of the Configuration dialog to add a new datum transformation.
  • Added ability to modify attributes for multiple selected features using the Digitizer Tool. There is now a section on the edit dialog for working with attributes if you are editing multiple features at the same time.
  • Added support for loading ASTER L1A imagery files in their native HDF file format, ASPRS LIDAR LAS files, ASRP (Arc Standard Raster Product) files, Hypack Matrix files, and Marplot MIE files.

  • Added support for exporting loaded data to a Global Mapper package file (*.gmp). These files are similar to workspace files except that the actual data is stored in the files. Package files provide an easy way to pass around lots of data between Global Mapper users with a single self-contained file.
  • Added new File menu command to load all files matching a user-specified mask (or series of masks) under a selected folder on the disk. This provides an easy way to load a lot of files that are spread out in a large directory structure.
  • Added support for cropping raster and elevation data to a selected area feature on export.
  • Added support for loading ASTER DEM and L1B imagery files in their native HDF file format.
  • Added additional functionality to the Digitizer Tool, like double-clicking to edit a feature, the ability to create area features from lines, and the ability to add islands/holes to area features.

December 1, 2003 - Strategic Agreement Puts Global Mapper Software into Intermap Programs

Denver, CO Intermap Technologies, Inc. and Global Mapper Software LLC today announced they have formed a strategic alliance to further develop and market the software tool 'Global Mapper'. The agreement allows Intermap to distribute the Global Mapper software at no charge to customers who buy data from Intermap's archive or through its custom projects program.

We wanted to provide our customers with tools that will allow them to immediately use our elevation and image data said Eric DesRoche Intermap Vice President Value Added Services. We will bundle 'Global Mapper by Intermap' with all datasets we deliver. Customers will have immediate access to a wide range of applications using elevation data - profiling, line-of-sight, viewshed, plus several other applications available within the software. The agreement allows Intermap to provide solutions, not just data to our customers.

The agreement calls for Intermap to obtain access to the source code of Global Mapper for distribution with their elevation and image products and to allow for the future development of visualization and GIS tools said Mike Childs President of Global Mapper Software LLC. We are already in discussion about adding 3D visualization to the package, thus increasing value to Intermap customers.

The Global Mapper software tools will be a great benefit to our NEXTMap customers continued DesRoche. We will immediately include the software with all our NEXTMap Britain data. We plan on having a more advanced version available early 2004 for distribution with our recently announced NEXTMap USA program.
